"Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest" Joshua 1:9.
This short scripture speaks volumes.
We are all familiar with the prophet Moses and the history of how he met with God face to face. We know the story of how Moses through the power of God was able to convince the Pharaoh of Egypt to allow the enslaved Israelite people to go free. Moses was an incredible prophet and leader. Imagine how Joshua must have felt when after Moses' death, he becomes the new prophet and all of the Israelite people are now looking to him to lead them into the promised land. As you read the first chapter of Joshua, the Lord tells him in several different verses to 'be strong and of a good courage'. Do you think that Joshua was feeling a little overwhelmed? Do you think he felt a little insecure about his new position considering how great a prophet Moses had been? I'm sure he must have been experiencing many of these feeling and more which caused the Lord to counsel him personally with the words "Be Stong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dimayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."
What comfort these words must have given Joshua - to know that the Lord would be with him where ever he went and in what ever he did.
Often times I know that you too have some of those feelings of self doubt and inferiority that Joshua experienced. I know that I do. Isn't it nice to know that the words that were spoken by the Lord to Joshua, were spoken to us as well. We can draw strength from the knowledge that He will be with us 'whithersoever' we go when we exhibit faith in Him and are of 'a good courage'. What is 'a good courage' you ask? I believe that it is showing our faith in Him with our actions. Standing up for those truths we know and living as one of His disciples daily.
I am so grateful that the General YM/YW Board selected this scripture as our theme for 2010.
